Mission Community Sides With More Affordable Housing at La Maravilla (The Marvel)

SAN FRANCISCO—A three-part community engagement series to determine the massing for The Marvel in the Mission—a 100% affordable housing development at 1979 Mission Street—concluded with community members voting to move forward with a 112-unit Phase 3 building. The outcome underscores the community’s ongoing commitment to housing solutions that reflect local priorities.

Two of the meetings were hosted at the historic Women’s Building and focused on a comprehensive shade analysis for the future development, which will serve families, seniors, and formerly homeless individuals.

Community members were presented with two design options. Option 1 proposed a 9-story building with 112 total units. Option 2 featured a stepped-down design, transitioning from 9 to 6 stories adjacent to Marshall Elementary, with a total of 102 units. Each session drew strong interest and participation, ensuring that local voices shaped the development’s direction. In the final tally, 69.2% of participants selected Option 1, 27.5% chose Option 2, and 3.3% submitted inconclusive votes.

“At the June 5th Maravilla community meeting, residents came together as part of a three-part engagement process to help shape the future of the site at 1979 Mission Street. The community voted to move forward with the option that maximizes much-needed affordable family housing units, reflecting the priorities of local families. We remain committed to following the community’s direction and ensuring their voices continue to guide this important project,” said Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) and Mission Housing, co-developers of the project.

MEDA and Mission Housing thank all the community members and partners who participated in these sessions. We also extend our deep appreciation to the staff of The Women’s Building for hosting and supporting this vital community dialogue.

The development teams will continue to share updates and plan future engagement opportunities. For the latest on La Maravilla – The Marvel, subscribe to the mailing list at www.1979missionsf.com.
